No. The SWD100 is to be used by a trained clinician, and the clinician remains with the patient throughout shortwave diathermy therapy. The pivoting electrode arm carries the applicator so that nobody has to hold it, and an electrode must never be held in the hands during therapy. All unnecessary persons stay out of the treatment location.

The contraindications fall into these categories: implanted electronic devices including pacemakers, defibrillators, bladder, spinal cord, deep brain and other nerve stimulators, cochlear implants, bone growth stimulators, myoelectric prosthesis electrodes and any implanted metallic lead; metal, internal or external, including implants, sites where implants were removed, braces, fillings, staples, fixators, joint replacements, metal IUDs and shrapnel; haemorrhage or risk of it, severe arterial obstruction, deep vein thrombosis, phlebitis, varices and occlusive vascular disease; altered temperature sense in either direction; septic conditions, empyemas, osteomyelitis, tuberculosis and acute inflammations; malignant and undiagnosed tumours; pregnancy, the menstrual cycle, the pregnant or potentially pregnant uterus and reproductive organs; and application over the eyes, the carotid sinuses, the stellate ganglion, the vagus nerve, open lamina and the epiphyses of growing bones.

Metal in the treatment area provides low impedance paths, producing local heating and the possibility of burning. Do not administer shortwave diathermy to a patient who has had an implant in the past unless you are absolutely certain that the implant and all leads in their entirety have been removed. Patients with implanted electronic devices must not be treated even if the implanted device has been turned off, and a lead left in place counts as an implant for this purpose.
