Inside the Shell

How it works

Red, red with infrared, and blue each reach the skin differently, and the shell holds all 648 emitters a fixed distance from the face while they do.

Three settings and no more. Blue runs at 415 nm, red at 633 nm, and the third pairs red with infrared at 830 nm. Infrared is light just past the red end of what the eye can see, so on that third setting part of what the mask is emitting is invisible to you. One setting plays at a time.

The Routine

Three minutes a colour with a preset

A session runs three minutes on each of the three settings, nine minutes end to end. Blue first, then red, then red with infrared, and the mask moves between them on its own. The usable range starts at 3 minutes, so a shorter session is a legitimate way to use it on a day you do not have nine minutes to stand still. The eye shields go in at the start and lift out again afterwards.

The Shell

A rigid mask at 576 grams

The shell on this one is rigid, and it is the heavier of the two Therabody masks. It measures 200 mm by 230 mm by 180 mm, weighs 576 g on its own and 636 g once the display stand is counted. One size is made and no facial measurement chart exists, so the fit is what it is: a shell that sits over the face with the strap taking the weight. The materials are a polycarbonate blend with silicone eye shields.

About 120 minutes of light on a charge

The mask quotes two runtimes because it does two things. With the lights running it goes about 120 minutes, which is more than a dozen full preset sessions. In vibration mode it goes 60 minutes. Both come off the same internal battery and both refill over USB-C, with the cable supplied in the box. Nothing about the mask needs a phone or an app to work.
